My Weekly Blog for last week!

I have to say this week was just overwhelming! I don't think it what was due but just the week in general. We started using an online program in my freshmen Social Studies class and technology through us all for a loop. The program did not like 18 students on all at once and showed some of the quirks the program has not all that it showed me how much students really depend on the teacher. They had no idea how to work independently on the program. They wanted all the answers and didn't necessarily want to do the work for it.
I think that this when talking about chapter 8 and chapter 9 lead to an interesting week. I think that instruction in how to use media is important. On page 145, Jacobs point out some of the benefits of Education in Media Literacy.

  • Media Literacy is interdisciplinary and easy to integrate into existing elements of existing/emerging curriculum
  • Media literacy works well in teams and groups, fostering cooperative learning
  • Media Literacy connects the curriculum of the classroom to the curriculum of the living room
I think I need to find a way to make sure this program is connecting to them and their life. Many of them so far think it is just busy work and I am not teaching them anything. I hoping when they see the end project they will realize that it is all worth learning.

  1. Yes, a good point...that may have less to do with the technology you were using than that you were doing something new. When we introduce something new as much as we think it will be engaging, interesting, and motivating...it is still new and takes multiple repetitions before it becomes comfortable.
